Salon talk on Slashdot

Slashdot | Salon, Nearly No Money and Ultramercials. The news isn’t new, but there’s some interesting talk on Slashdot about it.

Why hasn't Ruth Lilly heard of Recipezaar?

Lilly Heir Makes $100 Million Bequest to Poetry Magazine

An ailing heir who tried but failed to have her poems published in a small literary journal has given that journal an astonishing bequest that is likely to be worth more than $100 million.

New Talk

We put the new Talk up last night. Unfortunately, it went very poorly… intending to just rsync up a single directory, I started by rsync’ing wrong and wiped out the entire site on the live server! So I had to bring the site down completely (I wanted to just bring Talk down during the upgrade) and re-sync everything back up. But because rsync on the server had to build a list of every file in the Apache dir which included almost a million cache files (!), it took years. I finally realized this and stopped it, moved the cache dir out of the way, rsync’d and put the cache back. All in all, the site was down for 1.5 hours; the longest downtime in history I believe.

But we finally got it back up and everything was good. People really love it and are having fun with all the new emoticons and colors (good thing we removed the font size option!). The performance is also just fine, which was a concern to me with the more SQL-heavy Talk software.

We then proceeded to drink way too much Maker’s Mark in celebration and stayed up til 3am reading the boards, listening to music and dancing. Ugh.

So today we’re taking it easy and probably won’t work much at all.

Recipe Counter

44,000 recipes. Damn, we’re big. John Riggins was #44.

Train of Tomorrow — Today!

Monorail passes by ~300 votes!

Couldn’t be happier. Read more about why people wrongly reject the mono and why it is a good thing ffrom Slate… The Romance of the monorail

Monorail vote

The Monorail trails by 3 votes. There are 3,200 Seattle ballots left to be counted. These ballots were cast in-person (not absentee) which had a 54% approval average. Monorail propoents are predicting victory and opponents are still conceding. We will know for sure tomorrow.

Moxi

The Moxi PVR sounds really cool. It’ll be hard to beat TiVo’s great UI, but it’s something to watch — I’m sure we’ll be needing to upgrade or add a TiVo-like device in the not too distant future.

Winter cleaning

Got up on the roof and cleaned the gutters. Removed a lot of standing water but the leaves are still too wet to take down, so I just swept them out of the way and into piles.
